Volunteering in Pampas

PAMPAS

Pampas is a small city, surrounded by beautiful mountains, big green areas and wonderful views. Pampas is located in the Opamayo valley in the Peruvian Andes. A one and a half hour ride away from the city of Huancayo. Pampas has about 10 880 habitants, there main economic activity is agriculture and livestock.

The people are very nice and warm, hard workers as well. They want their city to progress, but they have to face a lot of poverty. On a national level Pampas has a high percentage of poverty. Kids and grownups aren’t properly fed and the schools and baby houses need help. One teacher a classroom isn’t enough for the many students.

The same happens with the hospital. People get sick and they don’t have enough money to cover their medical expenses. Also there exists a lack of information about a lot of themes.

Because of all this, the children and people of Pampas need help from persons who wants to help and change something about this reality y give some happiness to “ los Pampinos”.
They are waiting for you and feel like getting to know you. 



1. PROJECT HOSPITAL 

The hospital of Pampas is situated at 4 blocks away from the main square. The hospital offers different departments and specialties. Because of this it provides a mayor contribution to the care and health of the local community.

• Surgery and anesthesiology 
• Pediatrics 
• Gynecology and obstetrics 
• Dentistry 
• Emergency 
• Nursing 
• Diagnostic support  (X-ray) 
• Treatment support

Doctors, nurses and advanced students in medicine can start working here. You will work at the department of your choice. You work together with local doctors and nurses. You support them in their job, and exchanges ideas and knowledge.

In consultation with the doctors and the director it is also possible to organize campaigns for the local community. This can be from vaccination campaigns to information campaigns about for example contraceptives.

People with a lot of interest and knowledge in health can also participate in the campaigns.

You want to know what it’s like at the other side of the world. You’re open minded and you realize that things go different and that you won’t have the same opportunities and materials to work with. It is not just a volunteer opportunity but also a cultural exchange.

Knowledge of Spanish is not a condition but it is recommended. It will promote mutual contact and respect with the doctors and patients. 

Duration of the project:

• You can participate in this project for one month or more. But the longer you can stay the better. The time is mutually agreed, you can come all year long.

Cost:

• The price is 1050 Nuevos soles the first month, and from the second month 500 Nuevos soles. 

• This is for your housing and food, the price also includes administration costs and coordination during your stay in Peru. From the second month on you just pay your housing and food.

• You will be staying in a guest house sharing with a Peruvian family and possible other volunteers. You will get three meals a day.

•You can choose a pick up from the airport or come on your own to Huancayo

The pick up will cost 250 soles. 

Included: 
• Person waiting for you in the airport
• Taxi to the hotel
• Overnight at the hotel (a bed in a dormitory with shared bathroom)
• Taxi to the bus station
• Bus to Huancayo
• Person waiting for you at the bus station in Huancayo. 

If you choose to travel on your own to Huancayo, someone will be picking you up at the bus station in Huancayo and will bring you to Pampas.
 
The pick up is paid directly to the person who picks you up. The rest you pay in Soles, the local currency, at arrival in Huancayo.

2. PROJECT SCHOOL

The school is a country school, primary school, which depends from the government. The school is located at walking distance from the main square of Pampas, or you can take a mototaxi. The students here are between 6 and 12 years old, these kids come out the poorest families of Pampas. Often, forced by the poverty of their family, they work after school time. The school has a lack of material to work with, the government doesn’t invest either. Because of this the children can’t enjoy good education.

Help is very welcome in this school. The kids want to learn. Even they have a hard life, they always will have a smile ready for the volunteers.

The children need a lot of help. Help in studying English, computer, art and a lot of other courses. Help the children to find there opportunities and skills.

The arrival of volunteers in this school is a big help. This way the children can enrich there mind and work towards a better future.

Teachers, students of education or persons with a big interest in education or just a big hart are able to work here.
You work together with the teacher from the school. You support them in their job and exchanges ideas and knowledge. By this you help to better the school system.

In consultation with the teachers and the director of the school it is possible to organize campaigns. For example: Social campaigns to raise awareness with the population to help children en extreme poverty. Not just help the school but also the whole community.

You want to help, mean something. You want to know what it’s like on the other side of the world. You are open minded and realizes that thing are done differently. You realize you won’t have the same opportunities and material as at home.
You have a base of the Spanish language. This is necessary to communicate with the children and teachers. It will promote mutual contact and respect.
